Sermon of the Week (SOTW)

January 23, 2011

Scripture: Matthew 4:12-33; 1:10-18

An arrest had been made. A government had clamped down hard, and seized upon a perceived enemy of the state. Silenced, so the authorities thought, was this rambunctious, justice proclaiming, sermonizer. It is fitting, then, that this act of injustice should be the starting point of one person’s ministry, that of Jesus. Yes, there was a miraculous birth; yes, there was the epic baptism; and yes, Jesus faced the tempter. Yet, those are precipitating moments of Jesus’ ministry, according to Matthew. Miracles of life, of perseverance were not the decrees of ministry. When injustice stood up, Jesus started walking.
