"The General Assembly of North Carolina has become intoxicated and maligned with such bigotry and hate that they are willing to limit the rights of heterosexuals. It's time to take a stand against this show of vitriolic demonization of our common humanity."

North Carolina faces many grueling and difficult political fights this year. Among them is the fight over Amendment 1. We Are NC has initiated the consensus-building necessary to fight against Amendment 1. We Are NC is a campaign of organizations, religious institutions, and individuals working together to defeat the anti-gay marriage amendment. You can find them on Facebook or their webpage.

If you don't know much about Amendment 1, here's the rundown:

On May 8, 2012 North Carolinians will vote on an amendment that would establish "Marriage between one man and one woman” as the “only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state." Now, this is not only an issue around LGBTQ rights, but also heterosexual couples. Yes, the GOP-lead General Assembly has managed to create legislation that goes against their own voting base.

We Are NC is not recklessly fighting against this measure, but has defined their stance and principles on this issue. Here are their principles:

1. We are against the amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman.
2. We are for equality.
3. We are against government telling places of worship who they can and cannot marry.
4. We are for separation of church and state.
5. We are pro family.
6. We believe the constitution should expand rights, not limit them.
7. We believe this amendment is harmful to business and the state’s ability to compete.

Among those that have come out in support of We Are NC are the Greensboro Atheist Organization, Occupy Greensboro, Proximity Hotel, O. Henry Hotel (Obama stays there when he's in Greensboro, NC), and College Park Baptist Church. Supporters range in voice and identity, but the common idea is that Amendment 1 harms all people, regardless of sexual identity. Moreover, the state of North Carolina, one of the fastest growing in the nation, will face a downturn if this Amendment is passed.

The entire nation, however, should support the cause against Amendment 1. After all, if it were to pass that act alone could be enough to instill and cement support for similar bills across the nation. In the coming weeks I will be seeking bloggers to support this move by placing the We Are NC logo on their blogs, FB pages, or other sites. If you are someone wanting to support this move on your page or blog, please email me at libsandcons@libsandcons.com or put your name in the comment section below.

When our government got involved in marriage by including it in tax legislation, contract law, and all manner of insurance and survivorship regulations, we all became bound by our Constitution to treat ALL people equally under the law. That means we must treat homosexual and heterosexual couples the same. The churches can marry who they want to, but the US government does NOT have that option under the law.

Martin - well said. One unequivocal reality is that politicians are attempting to legislate morality, whatever they think that is. Taxes, contract law, et al are certainly legal issues that must be addressed for the social contract to function properly, and for the society to continue operating. Yet the issue of hetero/homosexual marriage is not apart of that contract, and the definition of marriage remains unnecessary for the continuance of the nation.

I really am confused why this is an issue. But I can assure ever man woman and child that IF this bill passes there will be more. Maybe people beyond child bearing age should not be allowed to marry. Perhaps we will be forced again to tread the worn out path of barring interacial marriages. How about mixing religions? Why even allow different religions??!!! In fact only Blonde haired Blue eyed men and women may marry

Jeff - your confusion is shared. It is, no doubt, a slippery slope of legal issues. Where do we stop? After all, if legislation is, as I think this is, a matter of moral belief, then who's to say that years later there's a different idea of what "marriage" is? Last I checked, the rights afforded in the Constitution do not care about marriage; they care about allowing people to live their lives as the deem fit.

There are many groups against Amendment 1. "Vote Against Amendment One" has over 7,000 people on it. There needs to be an overwhelming NO on Amendment 1 to send a message to the politicians. Let people marry the person they love no matter what faith, color, or sex.

i unequivocally support this move and would love to have the We Are NC on my fb page. amendment 1 is a hate filled attempt at legal bigotry and discrimination. nc doesn't need it, and america doesn't need it. it's a dangerous precedent that our state should not take any part in. but unfortunately there are those in our state who have felt emboldened in placing us square in the middle of a nasty push for this kind of thing. every voice needs to speak loud and clear in opposition. count mine in!

This website and the things you claim to stand for are ignorant. I read this post and noticed principle #6... Someone please explain to me how the constitution limits rights. Either you have no idea about history or you have a specific agenda that desires a communist state.

MrEdge, Please allow me to break this into bite size portions for you. The intended point is NOT that the Constitution DOES Limit Rights. The intended point is to Prevent the beliefs of some from being forced upon all and thereby distorting the Constitution to suit whims. Such whims would be "Limiting Certain Rights". Make sense yet? How about this: The Constitution exists as a template or map, if you will, for living as a civilized society with mutual interests AND individual freedoms. Got it? Maybe this will help -Try to see America as a country club where everyone who pays their dues and abides by a few simple rules of civility can expect peaceful enjoyment of all the benefits the club provides. You may have to park in a certain area and call ahead to book a tee time or perhaps even stand in line for the diving board at certain times, but once you become a member in good standing then you are entitled to the same benefits as every other member. If another member or group of members, whether power crazed, selfish and evil or just confused, wanted to limit the use of the country club to only those members with red hair and green swim trunks, would that seem just? Oh, and they also still expect all other members to keep paying their dues even though they are no longer receiving the benefits of membership. Would it then be reasonable to believe that the spirit of membership is being abused to Limit the Rights of some members? See it now? Then how about this - Its OK to want rules of order and to feel a desire to be civil and fair in your dealings with others. It is even OK to want others to have success, happiness, and health. These feelings don't make you a "Closet Communist".They make you a "Human Becoming". Perhaps the saddest thing about Laws like this one is they make those of us with loving hearts who find no conflict in science and Christ suffer right along with the "Snake Handlers" by painting us all with the same brush of ignorance...(I'm sure I'll get letters now)
